    Recommend?: Good to Go!
    Date of Visit: January 2013

We had the pleasure of enjoying a stay at West Bay Lodge for the 2nd time! This time we where traveling with my 4 year old and by mid-week she was calling our bungalow (#6) “home”.

Airport pick-up was included in our stay, and we asked the driver to stop at the grocery store on our way so we could stock up on some essentials for our stay. This was so convenient because we where able to pick up some snacks and ‘American Milk’ to last us the length of our visit.

We where warmly greeted upon our arrival by Celeste and Milos, the friendly owners. Check in (and check out) was a breeze. Our luggage was brought up to our bungalow and Milos then showed us around our bungalow and then prepared three famous rum punch for us (minus the rum for the little one!). They where fantastic! Jacob, the owner’s son quickly came to greet us when he returned from a daily walk on the beach with another guest. He made us feel right at home.

Our bungalow was very clean, sunny and perfectly suited for a family. It had 2 bedrooms, a bathroom and a kitchen. The air-conditioning worked like a charm and the safe came in handy to hold our money, travel documents and passports (it can’t hold a DSLR camera or iPad mini). We found an umbrella and a beach umbrella for our use if needed. We stored our iPads in our empty suitcases and locked them with the locks we brought with us. This place is very secure, so this was really an extra precaution on our part.

The kitchen in our bungalow was fully equipped, and we made good use of the fridge, microwave, stovetop, as well as the coffee maker. The unit had everything we needed to make our own meals or light snacks when we felt like it. The fridge was well stocked with a variety of drink and a snack basket with cookies and potato chips. The water cooler in the kitchen was very helpful.

The beds where very comfortable and there was lot’s of closet space and shelving to store our belongings. The bed linens where in excellent condition and very clean. The bathroom was beautiful with a big shower and a glass wall. They provide tropical scented shampoo, conditioner and sops. And the shower head is like a rain-shower… so calming and relaxing. Fresh towels and a big sink and mirror completed this little sanctuary.

Your bungalow has a TV with DVD player and they have hundred’s of titles that you can borrow free of charge at the front desk. Just pop yourself some popcorn in the microwave and have a fun movie night with the kids :) They have alarm clocks in the bungalow, so you don’t need to bring your own.

The balcony was by far the most used ‘room’ in our bungalow :) With 2 hammocks, a table & chairs, a porch light and an overhead fan, we spent most of our ‘down time’ there. Surrounded by tropical vegetation including a flowering banana tree that you could actually touch from your balcony! Watching pink/orange sky as the sun set from our balcony was relaxing and romantic. The bungalow was set atop stilts surrounded by lush greenery giving it a private and tropical feel.

There is a security guard in the evening and at night at the entrance of the restaurant/office. We felt safe at all times. Everyone on the staff is very friendly. The maids did an amazing job at keeping our floors clean of sand (no easy feat!) and we used the complementary laundry service and where pleased.

The pool is the perfect size for the location and number of guests.
The deck has sun chairs to lie out on, and Muskoka chairs with side tables perfect for reading and enjoying quiet time by the pool. The pool’s shallow entry point is great for kids. The table and swinging chairs next to the pool are a cute addition, and enjoying a breakfast there is something special to experience.

Celeste’s Island Cuisine restaurant serves wonderful food! The lobster dinner should not be missed! It’s well worth it – trust me! And the BBQ Pulled Pork Baleada, and the Shrimp Quesadilla will have you licking your fingers! Dining with the parrots was fun, and sure made for great conversation with neighbouring tables. The staff where great, and accepted to make some modifications to the items ordered for my little one, who like most 4 year olds is a picky eater. The warm corn tortillas quickly became a favorite at our table. The prices are very reasonable too!

Breakfast is included every morning and was always super delicious and filling. Your server brings you a fresh bowl of tropical fruit. Then you can help yourself to fruit juice, coffee or tea. There are 2 options for breakfast every morning so there’s no way to go wrong. You can also choose to have the breakfast buffet with options like: toast with butter or peanut butter, yogurt with muesli and dried raisins, cereals with milk, and breakfast pastries. You can also have your breakfast brought up to your balcony if you want to enjoy a more private morning.

I had the unique pleasure of enjoying a few services at Serenity Day Spa. The experience was a wonderful and relaxing one. I even brought my just turned 4 year old to get her 1st ever pedicure with me and the staff was so attentive and sweet with her. My daughter thoroughly enjoyed her experience. I also got a full body massage with essential oil and sensory candles, and a papaya facial ~ a tropical bliss!

The property cats where one of the highlights of my daughter’s vacation. She loved having them come around every now and then and lay out on our balcony in the sun. She also enjoyed watching the turtles in the 2 ponds.

A fruit vendor comes by a few times a week, and you can buy fresh locally grown fruits from the back of his truck at a very reasonable price. An island experience that we won’t soon forget :)

If you get a craving for something… let’s say and Ice Cream Popsicle ;) you can go across the street to the mini-market/convenience store. They have a wide variety of food for sale. And they make fresh sandwiches to order. They also sell roasted chicken meals made fresh daily on site. There is also a little dairy bar where you can get vanilla or chocolate soft serve in a cone or cup! And a coffee shop in that mall too.

West Bay Beach is truly amazing. A little piece of paradise for sure! You can rent beach chairs by the week at Bananarama, and I would recommend it since it’s very affordable (and it’s a challenge to find a public spot on the beach on during Cruise Ship Days. But on days the cruise ships aren’t in, it’s no problem at all. Local vendors walk along the beach selling everything from cigars to ice cream, jewelry to hammocks. But they aren’t pushy at all, and are very few unless the Cruise Ships are in port. The awesome thing about Cruise Ship Days is that you’ll see a big blow up structure out in the water. It has a super big slide and a giant trampoline! You can pay $10 for the day and get to play on it as much as you want! That afternoon was another highlight for my daughter and I.

West Bay Lodge is in a fantastic location, providing privacy and tranquility. But it’s just a short walk to the beach and nightly entertainment. The walk from your bungalow to the beach is literally 3 minutes! So don’t let the fact that you’re not staying ‘on the beach’ deter you from staying at West Bay Lodge. It’s actually closer to the beach than you are in many big resorts where they have to bus you to the beach. You don’t need to pack your own beach towels since you can just pick some up (complementary) at the front desk on your way to the beach! You can also rent snorkel equipment for a very fair price. If you need things like sunscreen they sell that to. Should you require anything from a drugstore or ‘in town’ just ask the owners and they will get it for you the next time they go into town. I would not hesitate to stay here again and have recommended West Bay Lodge to all my friends asking for my opinion on my favorite vacation destination. :)
