Good to Go!:
Half Baked Ideas is a nut free bakery that does amazing cupcakes, cakes and chocolates. They make everything fresh and with absolutely the best ingredients. They frost their cupcakes and cakes with a Swiss meringue buttercream instead of the typical Amerian style icing or frosting. Wonder what the difference is? Frosting can be gritty, leave an aftertaste and be sickly sweet. It is made with icing sugar, butter/shortening/margarine,milk and vanilla. Swiss meringue buttercream is made with egg white, granulated sugar, unsalted butter and vanilla and/or flavorings or fruit purees or chocolate. Swiss meringues take a lot of work and are silky smooth, light, fluffy and simply delicious. The cupcakes at Half Baked are light and moist, even the vanilla. The strawberry and lemon buttercreams taste like strawberry and lemon and even have real pieces of fruit in them and on top. The service is amazing. They take time to answer your questions and will bake up fresh items for you without any hassle. I had one of the best customer service and taste experiences here on my search for delicious cupcakes. I call it the “Cupcake Crawl of 2012″.
Not so Much/ Suggestions for Improvement:
There are only 2 flavors of cupcake cake -chocolate and vanilla. This is to keep things as safe as possible ina nut free zone. If you ask really nicely, you can get lemon as I did. They do have different flavored cakes and buttercreams and fillings though. They don’t have much to buy for walk in business so always call ahead or go on a weekend. There is no red velvet as they want to avoid food colorings as much as possible. These aren’t your grocery store cupcakes but premium quality cupcakes so the price is $2.35 for regular size and $1.75 for minis. However, this is among the lowest in Toronto according to my research and I have been to almost 20 cupcakeries or bakeries now.
Quick Tips for Others:
Call ahead to ensure they have stock on hand. If you are placing a special order, make sure to give at least 2 weeks notice if possible. However, they will do their best to accommodate all orders if they can. They do 3D cakes, cupcake pullapart cakes (I like these for school parties, no knives and hassle), character cakes and will work with your theme.
Get your own toppers at the Dollar Store, Bulk Barn, McCalls, Walmart or Party City and save money by just putting your won toppers on the cupcakes. They will put on sparkles, sprinkles and dragees (pearls) at no extra charge. If you want them to do all the work, prices do go up to customize cupcakes but they can do it all. Among all the nut free bakeries I tried, these are my favorite. However, if you like a really sweet frosting and are a fan of most of the cupcakes in Toronto, these aren’t for you. If you like light, creamy and fresh cakes and buttercream, this place is perfect.
